4-Year-Old Fashion Police
I believe that the only people who have boys older than Jake and who read this blog are my in-laws. So, Mary Lou and Richard, if you could please tell me if this is normal behavior... :)

Jake has suddenly become very concerned with what he wears to school. Yesterday he vetoed a shirt I had picked out in favor of his own choice. This morning, our outfit-picking took a good ten minutes.

"Good shirt, Mommy. It looks cool on me (yes, he said that). Except...I think it's too big." (The shirt this morning was a little big. But the shirt he picked to wear yesterday fell to his knees...) So we went through a series of shirts.

The white shirt with blue and black stripes. "Hmm...No, I don't think animals are cool, and that shirt reminds me of a zebra."

A blue polo shirt. "No, that shirt is not cool."

The white shirt with square designs. "No, that shirt reminds me of a dog." (Yeah, I don't get that.)

Finally, we agreed on a "cool" shirt. Then he looked at his pants. "Mommy, aren't these yesterday's jeans?"

I thought at first he meant, "These jeans are sooo yesterday," but apparently he thought he'd worn them yesterday. But no, I assured him, these jeans are clean.

So he went off to school, in today's jeans and a cool shirt.

I thought boys didn't care what they wore??

What a weird little dude. ;)

My only concern is that I clash in no more than two colors.
All pants have a two day wear cycle, baring accident or injury.

Don't worry, he'll have lots of interesting friends in Mary Foust. :D

Have you met Russ? He owns more clothes & shoes than I do and will tell me very clearly that I do not have any taste in men's clothing.

This is my professional extended version (of the 5 minute tv psychologist variety) - read only if you want, and take what you want if any.

I don't have children older than Jake - or younger - but if my opinion counts for anything it is very normal behavior. This is part of the choices conversation - Jake, today's choices are the blue shirt with black stripes or the white shirt with squares. I'm sorry but the purple shirt with the squiggles on it is not an option today. We can make that a choice for tomorrow if you would like. - Yes, he might throw a temper tantrum for a while. But, at least he's getting some of the control he wants, and you're not spending 10 minutes trying to get him into a shirt.

The conversation will probably roll back into a "cool" conversation - but you can roll this into the standing up for himself issue. Tell him it's cool if he wants it to be cool. And that when he goes to school he should walk in and say, "Look at how cool my shirt is!" Kids at this age are still determining what's cool and what's not based on what people tell them (generally other children's older siblings or parents). Not based on how much something costs or what the "cool" kids are wearing, or what the see on tv and movies (other than superheros, cartoons, and toys of course) - that happens a little later. :)

Wow! Maybe he should talk to Emi. I can't get her to coordinate her cloths at all.

He is totally normal! I agree with gypsyrdrnnr (whatever that means LOL) YOu should try and give him a choice of two or three differant shirts. He is learning to be independant and make choices of his own. Grif does this to sometimes. He always wants to wear his superhero shirts to school. I will not let him because he will become the superhero on his shirt and get into trouble. If he has batman on he will be batman all day! LOL!
