Pulling Your Punches
Today Jake told us that a little boy in his class pushed him several times on the playground. This isn't the same boy we've dealt with before (in fact, it sounds like that little boy may have been helping him get away from the other boy), but a different one who also treats Jake like a little kid. I mean, Jake is a little kid...but no more so than those boys are.

So when we got home, Ike and Jake practiced punching and pushing. This is all foreign territory for me. I grew up thinking that if someone bothered me, I should tell the teacher and that would be it. When my mom married my dad, he taught me the right way to make a fist (and to throw a baseball), but I never actually needed to make a real fist. I never had a bully. Well, I did, but I just ran and told the teacher...

That works just fine for the little shy blonde girl. But for a little boy who may always be small, he needs a better defense.

So he's learning to punch. And wow, he's strong. I may be biased, but I think he could knock down any kid on the playground if push literally comes to shove. It's a strangely comforting thing...My son can take care of himself, even without me or his dad (or the teacher).

And incidentally, I never knew the real meaning of "pulling your punches." Now I do.

Jake is such a sweet little boy. It just sucks that kids are so freaking mean like that. I guess he really does have to go ahead and get his mind set to take up for himself though. But I'm like you, its hard on a mother to let her child actually handle their problems themselves! We're supposed to fix it all for them.

I had a bully in Elem. School. Man she was mean, even the boys were afraid of her! I hate to think that my kids will have to go through this too, but it is just a part of life I think. All you can do is teach your kids how to defend themselves, as sad as that sounds. Don't feel bad, I leave that up to Gabe too and sometimes I question if that is such a good idea!!
